Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for historians, preservationists, and archeologists who research, support, manage and/or lead in the identification, evaluation, and preservation of historical artifacts, architecture, landscape and/or other historical areas. Duties range from entry-level professionals conducting historical research and publishing research findings to preservation program management in the administrative role and may function in an agency, museum, university or related field.

Roles Comprising This Group

The roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Historical Services and Preservation Career Group. The roles define the career paths for employees who pursue careers as historians, preservationists, and archeologists.

Although all of these occupations are social scientists, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Groups.

Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist I

The Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist I role is for historians and preservationists that perform entry-level professional to journey-level historical work. Duties include basic historical research; receipt, inspection, cataloging, inventorying, storing, and transporting historical or archaeological items; and/or preparation, preservation, organization, and maintenance of and exhibition of art and historical items/resources in an art or natural history museum or public historical preservation site.

Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist I

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of cataloging and documentation systems, inventory systems, and preventive conservation.
  • Applies knowledge of historical and/or preservation research methods.
  • Contacts include lenders, insurer’s representatives, and shippers for the arrangement of transportation of historical items, insurance certification, and information exchange.

RESULTS

  • Affects the accuracy of data and inventory systems and the efficiency of administrative support tasks surrounding movement, display and protection of art or historical works.
  • Affects the accuracy of program activities that rely on research findings.
  • The effective display or shipment of specimens resulting in avoidance of casualty claims.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • May lead or oversee the work of interns or volunteers.
  • Some independent decision-making ability relating to a variety of standard operations tasks.
  • Degree of detail, resources, and methodologies used generally determined at higher level.

 

Historian/Archeologist and Preservationist II

The Historian/Archeologist and Preservationist II role provides career tracks for historians, archeologists and preservationists that perform historical and/or cultural research, preservation and conservation responsibilities ranging from journey level to advanced level. Duties may include: archival and field research and inspections; drafting and/or editing manuscripts, technical or status reports, publications, and factual description texts of landmarks and historical properties; preparing project plans and monitoring grants and contracted work; recovering and examining artifacts and data; and, providing technical assistance in a specific area or on a wide range of programs.

Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist II

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of applicable policies/ regulations, and research methodologies.
  • Applies knowledge of technical, scientific investigative principles, practices and procedures within state/federal regulations.
  • Applies knowledge of culture and history related to artifacts architectural features and types of structures.
  • May require specialized knowledge of a particular period or civilization.
  • Presentation and writing skills are required.
  • Contact with public, property owners, vendors, historical associations, sponsors, government officials, hearing boards, park services, consultants, schools, and the media to provide technical assistance/information, education, to identify funding sources and/or outreach programs.

RESULTS

  • Accurate research, documentation, and consultation to minimize adverse impact by government and private entities in making decisions that affect historic resources.
  • Accurate information about historic sites, their use and preservation to provide to the public and to supervisors.
  • Reduced damage to and loss of significant and endangered historic properties and increased preservation and use of those resources for public and private benefit.
  • Increased revenue for the Commonwealth.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • May lead or supervise the work of staff, interns or volunteers.
  • Independent action and decision-making within well-defined guidelines.
  • Complex policies/ regulations applied with general supervision.

 

These two roles provide a dual career track for the archaeologists, and preservationists.

The Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist III role provides career tracks for archaeologists, historians, and preservations who coordinate multiple aspects of historical, architectural or archaeological preservation programs and provide information and technical advice of an advanced to expert level on one or more programs. Activities leading to or supporting identification, survey, inspection, evaluation, registration, review and monitoring, promotion, protection and conservation of historic and cultural sites may be performed or coordinated in this role.

Historian/Archeologist and Preservationist III

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies comprehensive knowledge and application of laws and technical and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of one or more historic preservation disciplines.
  • Contact with project sponsors and stewardship programs, schools, government officials, park services, property owners, and preservation groups to promote/coordinate special projects; provide technical and design assistance, interpretative and exhibit development support, and/or general research.

RESULTS

  • Significant impact on the preservation and use of historic resources for public benefit to citizens in terms of economic development, education and quality of life.
  • Agency image and financial support is enhanced.
  • Increased revenue for the Commonwealth.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • May supervise the work of staff, interns or volunteers.
  • Independent decision-making in program coordination; consults management in unusual circumstances.
  • Assesses and evaluates legal and technical requirements and develops program plans for implementation.

 

The Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist Manager role is for managers responsible for planning, directing, and administering several complex preservation programs within a geographic area and/or directing multiple statewide programs. Responsibilities may include the management of historic resources environmental review; projects and programs to identify and register historic properties; grants and proposals; technical negotiations; providing expert testimony and technical guidance; designation and/or appropriate treatment of historic resources and artifactual and archival data collections.

Historian/Archaeologist and Preservationist Manager

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of multiple historic preservation program areas including applicable state and federal statutes, regulations and guidelines.
  • Applies knowledge of human resource and financial management principles and practices.
  • Ability to plan and direct projects and programs and to develop long-range plans.
  • Contact with local, state, and federal officials, general public and private developers to provide information, technical assistance, resolve issues, evaluate program design, and/or make presentations.

RESULTS

  • Increased historic and architectural resources of the Commonwealth.
  • Tourism, housing, real estate, and urban redevelopment are economically enhanced.
  • Decisions and actions affect public and environment.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Effective management of programs and resources; sound decisions and judgment.
  • Manages professional, technical and operational staff.
  • Independently designs and manages assigned programs.
