Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for teacher aides, museum interpreters, extension agents, education services specialists, and education program coordinators who provide support to educational programs, job training and community service for schools, colleges and universities, businesses, residential facilities, museums, and the public. Employees perform duties that range from trainee to advanced roles.

 

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Education Support Services Career Group. The roles define the typical career paths for employees who pursue careers such as teacher aides, museum interpreters, extension agents, education services specialists, and education program coordinators.

Although all of these occupations provide educational support services, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Group.

Education Support Assistant

The Education Support Assistant role provides career tracks for teacher aides and others performing support activities such as locating, enrolling and explaining programs for designated clients, based on their needs and learning modes, on methods to improve their knowledge, skills and utilization of available program resources. Duties are well defined and range from trainee to journey level.
COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of basic principles and applications of the assigned program area(s).
  • Ability to adapt resource information to the needs of the clients and related audiences.
  • Ability to motivate and educate in proper techniques to enhance physical/economic well being.
  • Duties include identifying available community resources; providing basic technical assistance/guidance and instruction to clients individually and/or in groups; maintaining records and reports on program planning and evaluation; presenting written presentations to staff, advisory groups and others; and providing assistance to a wide range of educational programs.
  • Frequent contact with general public, program personnel, agencies and organizations within assigned geographic area(s)and targeted program audiences to explain services and provide and obtain information.
RESULTS
  • Agency's effort to provide extension services to targeted populations is enhanced.
  • Client's knowledge of techniques to maximize the use of resources and better their standard of living.

Education Support Specialist I

The Education Support Specialist I role provides career tracks for museum interpreters, demonstrators and others performing entry-level to journey-level specialists duties. Employees disseminate information to visitors, targeted audiences, program participants and the public.
COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of agency program or assigned area.
  • Ability to memorize and communicate information.
  • Ability to provide interpretive demonstrations to visitors.
  • May require some skill in fabricating, repairing and maintaining historic items of the assigned time period.
  • Duties are routine with little variation and may include presenting specialized demonstrations and programs, providing information to various audiences, and explaining and conducting guided tours to visitors
  • May present specialized programs to various audiences.
  • Frequent public/ participant contact for presentation and information exchange.
RESULTS
  • Visitors receive accurate site information and quality customer service.
  • Attendance and revenues are increased.
  • Agency's image is enhanced.

Education Support Specialist II

The Education Support Specialist II role provides career tracks for education services specialists whose duties ranges from entry-level to journey-level working within a defined region or identified area of an agency. Employees perform a variety of administrative and programmatic duties in support of educational programs.
COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of educational techniques, methodologies and program planning.
  • Applies knowledge of specialized program areas.
  • May require knowledge of state and federal financial aid regulations.
  • Responsibilities include preparation, presentation and maintenance of museum exhibitions; coordination and supervision of museum educational programs; planning, implementing, and evaluating a segment of an educational program; or program activities in support of enrollment services, student recruitment, financial aid, career planning/placement and student life/activities.
  • Contacts include the general public, students, parents, faculty, staff, financial institutions, schools, community organizations, businesses, entertainment agents, and subject professionals to coordinate public education efforts, to exchange information, and to assess interests and aptitudes.
RESULTS
  • Accurate information and quality customer service.
  • Programs are maintained and agency image is promoted.
  • Programs function effectively and efficiently and record keeping is accurate.
  • Program participation and revenue are increased.
  • Appropriate distribution of financial aid, scholarships and related student services.

  • May direct activities or assignments of volunteer groups and work study students.

Education Support Specialist III

The Education Support Specialist III role provides career tracks for education services coordinators or specialists, such as extension agents or certification analysts performing journey to advanced level responsibilities. Employees serve as a resource, advisor, coordinator, supervisor and/or educator in the delivery of designated educational or interpretive programs and support localities in their efforts to assess program/service needs.
COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of specialized program areas and/or interpretive/educational methodology.
  • May require knowledge of project planning, financial and grant accounting principles, or statistical analysis and interpretation.
  • May require considerable knowledge of the principles of adult education and/or state and federal financial aid regulations.
  • Responsibilities include reviewing credentials and issuing teacher licenses; conducting educational-based research analyses, identifying problem areas, and compiling statistical data to support program goals and objectives; coordinating complex activities in support of student enrollment services, financial aid, career planning/ placement and student life/activities; and/or developing, implementing, promoting and evaluating statewide policies and assigned educational programs.
  • Contacts include the public; students; parents; schools; faculty; staff; financial institutions; national, state and local health organizations; civic and professional organizations; businesses; special interests groups; and subject professionals to provide educational information and technical assistance, to discuss career opportunities, to assess interests and aptitudes, and promote programs.
RESULTS
  • Public awareness, knowledge and support of designated program are enhanced.
  • Participation and enrollment in programs are increased through quality customer service.
  • Agency image is enhanced, revenue is increased, and goals and objectives are accomplished.
