Concept of Work
This Career Group consists of positions that involve
the operation, monitoring, and control of multi-system information processing.
Types of systems and equipment supported may include mainframe consoles,
on-line terminals, peripheral equipment (e.g., tape drives, printers),
micro/mini computers, super computers, network devices, and file servers.
Positions may provide telephone help-desk diagnosis. Positions may also
modify systems in the production process. Positions range from entry level
to management levels.

Computer Operations Technician I
This role is for positions that involve work ranging
from performing the most basic entry-level skills to working independently
as a technician on smaller projects or segments of larger projects. Requires
education or equivalent training and experience in the field.
Computer Operations Technician I
COMPLEXITY
|
- Tasks apply existing policy and guidelines. May have some to
moderate variation and difficulty.
- Applies fundamental concepts, practices and procedures related
to computer operations, automated data processing, and computer
control language.

RESULTS
|
- Affects timely service and impacts quality of output to users.
- May impact the production schedule or require intervention of
higher level staff.
- May impact the availability of computing resources to other
users/customers.

ACCOUNTABILITY
|
- Solves routine computer operation problems. Refers other problems
to higher levels.
- Entry level work is often checked for accuracy.
- Works independently on smaller projects or segments of larger
projects.

Computer Operations Technician II
This role includes a dual track for positions that perform
Senior Technician responsibilities. The first track is for positions
that serve as a Consultant and provide technical leadership and
advice to address problems encountered, data analysis, and technical issues.
The second track is for positions that have Lead responsibilities
to include instructing, directing and monitoring the work of project staff.
Requires education and substantial to significant breadth and depth of
experience in the field.
Computer Operations Technician II
COMPLEXITY
|
- Responsibilities range from working independently on multiple
complex projects to serving as a technical consultant or a leader
of projects, typically with deadlines and heavy workloads.
- Applies broad range of knowledge and expertise of principles,
practices and procedures of particular function to the completion
of difficult and complex assignments.
- May provide consultation and advice on major implementation
ensuring services are not compromised and provide technical leadership
on integration of various related systems.
- The highest level positions in this role serve as a resource
to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.

- Affects the analysis of data and methodologies used.
- Affects reliability and utilization/availability of hardware/software
systems and applications by users/customers.
- Affects the timeliness and quality of computer processing information

experienced staff.

- May instruct, direct and monitor the work of other staff.

Computer Operations Manager I
This role is for positions that manage and coordinate
all activities of a unit with multiple projects to meet project deadlines
and budgets. Requires education and leadership experience in the field.
Computer Operations Manager I
COMPLEXITY

- Prioritizes and assigns work to subordinate staff.
- Plans and implements the delivery and improvement of service,
staffing and resources.
- Applies comprehensive knowledge of particular function, (e.g.
computer operations, production control, or network) to the oversight
of significant assignments.
- Resolves conflicting demands of users.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of services provided and recommends
changes in procedures to meet user’s needs.
- May perform any of the following: participate in development
of strategic planning activities, review and analyze data to predict
future needs and recommend enhancements; prepare budgeting and
cost analysis; develop technical standards and policies; plan
work of others to meet project deadlines; set priorities based
on user needs.

This role is for managers that supervise two or more functional areas
or shift operations. Requires supervisory experience and comprehensive
knowledge and experience in the field.
Computer Operations Manager II
COMPLEXITY

- Directs, through subordinate supervisors, all programs, operations
and staff in assigned areas.
- Provides budget administration and planning.
- Plans/evaluates and implements the delivery and improvement
of services, staffing and resources.
- Provides technical and project direction on major acquisitions,
implementations and conversion efforts.
- Applies comprehensive knowledge of particular function to the
oversight of significant assignments.
- Sets strategic direction and vision for the department.
