Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for engineering technicians who perform work in support of specialty technical engineering programs and projects, conduct research reviews, gather and analyze data, prepare statistical and other reports, conduct inspections, maintain automated engineering related data and/or draft plan details. Employees perform duties ranging from entry level to expert level. Employees may be required to have applicable certifications or licenses.

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Engineering Technology Career Group. The roles define the typical career paths for employees who pursue careers in this field, such as engineering technicians, cartographic drafters, and photogrammetrists. See list of the various specialty areas listed in the Engineering Technician Descriptors.

Although all of these occupations are engineering technicians, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and may not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Groups.

Engineering Technician I

The Engineering Technician I role provides career tracks for engineering technicians who perform or provide assistance to others who perform engineering activities. Duties range from trainee to entry level and are of limited scope and require knowledge of principles/techniques in a specific/narrow area of technical assignment and/or acquired through a formal training program

Engineering Technician I

COMPLEXITY

  • Performs entry-level technician work that involves conducting inspections, sampling and testing materials, and the collection and correlation of engineering and/or geological data.
  • Performs routine technical duties in support of others by drawing maps and diagrams, computing dimensions and quantities of materials, gathering samples for materials testing and assisting in compliance inspection activities.
  • Refers questions and problems to higher levels.
  • Applies construction, civil engineering, inspection and surveying techniques and procedures.
  • Applies principles of mathematics.
  • Skill in the operation of computer assisted drafting techniques, surveying equipment, or other tools of the trade.

Engineering Technician II

The Engineering Technician II role provides career tracks for engineering technicians performing at the journey level who apply technical skills in support of specialized tasks, phases and/or segments of a specialty-engineering project or assignment. Duties include drafting and sketching of engineering plans or maps; conducting on-site bridge/structure and project construction inspections; performing materials sampling and testing; calculating geometrics; or other specialty activities to ensure accurate program execution and compliance with Department, State and Federal regulations and standards.

Engineering Technician II

COMPLEXITY

  • Performs moderately complex technical tasks which are broad in scope and which require application of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular specialty engineering function.
  • Conducts routine data analyses and determines viability of data collected.
  • Identifies problems and recommends solutions or corrective actions.
  • Reviews routine project plans or portions of complex plans to determine compliance with state and/or federal regulations and design standards.
  • Ability to conduct engineering fieldwork and inspection and to perform drafting and design functions.
  • Operates various types of scientific and/or engineering equipment and uses varied technical instruments in performance of duties.
  • Uses automated and/or manual systems in preparing sketches, plans, drawings and/or tests of data and materials.
  • May require applicable certifications.

Engineering Technician III

The Engineering Technician III role provides career tracks for engineering technicians performing responsibilities ranging from advanced level to supervisory in support of a broad range of engineering specialty activities. Duties involve interpreting engineering guidelines; coordinating varied activities; performing engineering drafting and design work, traffic engineering improvements, materials acceptance evaluations, bridge/structure inspections and construction inspections for moderate to major scale projects; providing technical assistance to others; and performing detailed reviews of engineering related projects. This role also provides career tracks for photogrammetrists who perform entry level to advanced level responsibilities.

Engineering Technician III

COMPLEXITY

  • Performs a range of engineering related tasks requiring independent analysis and formulation of solutions to problems.
  • Assesses test procedures, materials failures and/or materials specifications.
  • Performs full cycle of studies or activities.
  • Prepares and reviews documents for finalizing.
  • Drafts and details elements needed to produce plans for construction.
  • Completes designs for unique and/or unusual engineering situations.
  • Develops drafts of details and standards for manuals and other publications used in engineering related functions.
  • Ensures design elements meet federal, state and agency requirements for strength, geometric and economy.
  • Computes various items to include elevations, dimensions, clearances and quantities.

The Engineering Technician IV role provides career tracks for engineering technicians who perform as experts and/or supervisors of technical specialty engineering support and/or coordination of research, planning, design, construction and/or rehabilitation of comprehensive engineering projects and activities. Duties range from ensuring that projects, programs and procedures are effectively and efficiently administered to providing practical technical expertise in making decisions in the review, analysis, coordination and delivery of a specialty engineering function.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN DESCRIPTORS

 

Bridge/Structure Inspection: Responsible for conducting visual, mechanical and underwater inspection of bridges and structures, inspecting overhead signs and traffic devices, planning and scheduling inspections, preparing comprehensive reports, preparing drawings to illustrate findings, structural analysis and maintaining and updating automated data on bridge conditions.

Cartography: Responsibilities include creating, tracing, revising, creating maps and performing research. Knowledge of GIS Mapping preferred.

Highway Construction Inspection: Responsible for monitoring, coordinating and directing all project inspection activities on roadway, tunnel, structure and bridge construction and maintenance projects.

Highway Permits and Subdivision Specialty: Responsible for administering highway programs involving the addition/acceptance of subdivision and rural streets in the secondary road system and the issuance of land use permits for the use of highway right of way land.

Preliminary Engineering: Responsibilities include performing tasks in engineering specialty areas such as roadway design, structure and bridge design, materials testing and sampling, inspection and compliance, traffic engineering, safety, data collection/analysis, or survey.

Photogrammetry: Responsibilities include planimetric mapping, stereo-plotting and analytical aerial triangulation activities including digitizing features, plotting contours, and generating ground profiles and cross sections for the preparation of aerial survey data.
