Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for dentists and oral surgeons licensed by the Virginia Board of Dentistry who perform in accordance with state law the full range of professional duties associated with direct dental care, supervision of dental clinic staff, and training. Additional license or certification may be required to perform certain procedures. Employees perform dental responsibilities ranging from entry level dentist to management.

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Dental Services Career Group. The roles define the typical career paths for employees who pursue careers as dentists or oral surgeons.

Although both of these occupations are dental specialists, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Groups.

Dentist I

The Dentist I role provides career tracks for dentists whose responsibilities range from entry level to first line supervision of others. Employees deliver direct dental care associated with: oral examinations; orthodontia; prosthodontia; periodontics; dental reconstruction; the administration of oral prophylactics; extractions and limited oral surgery; applying dental sealants; identifying sources of and treating infections; diagnosis and treatment planning; and taking and interpreting x-rays.

Dentist I

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing clinical dentistry.
  • Applies knowledge of principles of supervision.
  • May have program administration and supervision of staff.

RESULTS

  • Clients receive appropriate and quality dental care.
  • Dental care is provided in a professional manner ensuring that there are no liable actions.
  • Ensures a positive impact on oral health.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • As professionals delivering or directing complete dental care, employees are directly accountable for their actions.
  • Positions administer dental care without supervision.
  • Exercises sound judgment in effective direction and leadership.
  • May supervise others in performing of dental services.

The Dentist II role provides career tracks for oral surgeons who perform the most complex oral surgical procedures.

Dentist II

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of dental treatment procedures, dental hygiene and oral surgical procedures.
  • Requires additional formal education, certification, or license to practice oral surgery.

RESULTS

  • Clients receive appropriate and quality specialty dental and oral surgery care.
  • Invasive procedures are administered in a manner resulting in no serious impact on client's health or a liability to the state.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Serve as expert practitioners and are directly accountable for their actions.
  • Act as an authority in dental services and oral surgery to resolve the most severe and significant dental health problems.

 

The Dental Manager role provides career tracks for dentists who serve as dental program administrators whose management and oversight responsibilities range from managing dental clinics to overseeing the delivery of a comprehensive array of statewide services associated with dental health.

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of all functions of a comprehensive dental program to include knowledge of dental prevention programs.
  • Applies knowledge of related regulatory requirements.
  • Applies knowledge of program management.

RESULTS

  • A high-quality comprehensive dental program.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Develops, implements and evaluates programs.
  • Oversees staff and administrative and clinical functions.
  • Positions are ultimately accountable for program performance.
