Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for pharmacists licensed by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy who perform in accordance with state and federal laws the full range of professional duties associated with dispensing prescriptions, managing pharmacy operations, monitoring contracts, conducting investigations, teaching, and providing expert consultation. Employees perform responsibilities ranging from entry level professional to management.

Pharmacist I

The Pharmacist I role provides a career track for pharmacists performing pharmaceutical services ranging from entry level to advanced level. Responsibilities include compounding, filling, and dispensing prescriptions and providing clinical expertise in pharmacy services and programs in accordance with state and federal laws. Some employees inspect pharmacy facilities and businesses or investigate complaints or alleged law violations.

Pharmacist I

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of principles, practices, and laws governing pharmacy.
  • Frequently consults on matters related to administration of drugs with pharmaceutical companies, pharmacy facilities and businesses, clinical and programmatic staff, insurance carriers, customers, and schools of pharmacy.
  • Assignments include all aspects of dispensing prescriptions and medical supplies and inventory management within a pharmacy.
  • Adheres to accreditation standards and other regulatory requirements for dispensing and storing drugs.

RESULTS

  • Customer receives prescribed medication/supplies and advice on usage, side effects and interactions of medications.
  • Drugs are prepared and stored according to prescribed standards.
  • Pharmacies operate in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Exceptions are reported.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Independently resolves daily pharmacy issues.
  • Directly responsible for customer consultation.
  • May supervise paraprofessionals.

The Pharmacist II role provides career tracks for pharmacists who are either experts or supervisors. The first career track is for pharmacists that continue to deliver pharmaceutical services for customers while assuming additional responsibilities such as procurement, budget, inventory control, and staff supervision. The second career track is for pharmacists that have an expertise in the treatment by medication of a specialized population and serves as a consultant for other health care professionals.

Pharmacist II (Supervisory)

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of clinical and administrative practices and laws governing pharmacy.
  • Supervises administrative, clinical, and operational aspects of a pharmaceutical work unit.
  • Applies knowledge of the principles of supervising and directing the work of others.

RESULTS

  • Pharmacy operates according to state and federal regulations and within allocated resources.
  • Customers receive the correct medications and advice on the use of specific drugs.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Exercises sound judgment in effective direction and leadership; makes administrative and clinical decisions independently.
  • Provides guidance and training for other staff.
  • Helps others to resolve technical problems.
  • Develops on-site programs, monitors quality assurance, and is responsible for administrative as well as clinical functions.

 

Pharmacist II (Expert Consultant)

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of clinical practices and laws governing pharmacy.
  • Consultants require additional education and certification in order to provide expert knowledge in a specialized pharmaceutical field.
  • Advises physicians, customers, and other health-field professionals on the use, interaction and side effects of certain types of medication on a specialized population.

RESULTS

  • Customers receive the correct medications and advice on the use of specific drugs.
  • Well-being of customer and management of specific disease processes.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Exercises sound judgment in making clinical decisions independently.
  • Provides guidance and training for other staff.
  • Helps others to resolve technical problems.
  • Directly responsible for providing consultation, mentoring and pharmacy services to meet the needs of the customer.
  • Acts as an authority in a specialized field to resolve the most severe and significant problems associated with treatment of a specific population by the use of medications.

 

The Pharmacy Manager role provides career tracks for managers of pharmacy operations and is responsible for all procurement, storage, compounding, dispensing, and distribution of pharmaceuticals. Employees are also responsible for administrative management of the program, such as supervision and technical guidance of professional pharmacy staff, budget, planning, goals and objectives, quality assurance, and regulatory activities. Employees typically have agency-wide responsibility for procurement, storage, control, and distribution of pharmaceuticals to agency and local providers.

Pharmacy Manager

COMPLEXITY

  • Manages administrative, clinical, and operational aspects of complex pharmaceutical operations.
  • Applies knowledge of principles of management.
  • Applies knowledge of standards and guidelines required by the accrediting agents and the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
  • Contacts with other management, vendors, regulatory boards and others to resolve clinical and administrative problems.
  • Regulates activities associated with the practice of a pharmacy.

RESULTS

  • Pharmacy programs and staff ensure the safe distribution of medication and the well being of customers.
  • Continued accreditation of pharmacy services.
  • Pharmacy operates according to state and federal regulations and within budget.
  • State laws governing the practice of pharmacy parallel federal drug laws.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Develops programs.
  • Oversees staff and administrative and clinical functions.
  • Quality Assurance and program goals are met.
  • Determines eligibility to open a drug business.
  • Supervises, monitors and evaluates examinations and issues licenses.
