Concept of Work
This Career Group provides career
tracks for physicians
licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine who perform medical responsibilities
ranging from staff physician to management in accordance with state law.
Responsibilities include the full range of medical duties associated with
conducting physical, mental, and postmortem examinations; prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of patient illnesses; providing expert consultation;
managing health care services and public health care programs.
Roles Comprising This Group
These roles describe the collective
characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Physician
Services Career Group. The roles define the
typical career paths for employees who pursue careers as physicians.
Although all of these employees are physicians, there
are various types of physicians and each warrants a separate career track.
Each of the career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities
and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However,
a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work,
or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend
to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally
related Career Groups.

The Physician
I role provides a career track for physicians
that examine, diagnose, treat, counsel, and prescribe treatment for patients
and make referrals to medical or clinical specialists.
Physician I
COMPLEXITY
|
- Applies knowledge of medical principles and practices and skill
in the use of medical instruments, equipment, and procedures.
- Ability to accurately examine, diagnose, counsel, and treat
a variety of patients.
- Frequently consults on matters relating to medical treatment
with: patients and their families; medical, clinical, or other
professional staff; and insurance companies.

II role provides a career track for physicians
that lead or supervise health care services and/or serves as expert consultants
in a medical specialty.
Physician II
COMPLEXITY

- Tasks are varied and may include the most complex, critical
medical issues.
- May require knowledge of administrative and supervisory principles.
- Additional postgraduate education or board certification in
a specialty area may be required.
- Frequent contact with the public, legal establishment, or professional
organizations to discuss services or to provide expert opinions.

Physician Manager I
The Physician
Manager I role provides career tracks for physicians
that direct one or more statewide health programs or a variety of health
programs for a district or region. Positions in this role ensure that
policies, procedures, and outcomes of health care activities comply with
regulatory, legal, and medical standards.
Physician Manager I
COMPLEXITY

- Applies a variety of administrative, coordinative, and medical
techniques and practices.
- Applies knowledge of principles and practices governing medical
professions.
- Applies knowledge of management practices and principles.
- Analyzes medical problems and reaches conclusions that are logical
and legally sound.
- Positions may require additional graduate education in health
administration or public health.
- Frequent contacts to discuss medical programs with health care
professionals; professional associations; media; legislators;
local, state, and federal government agencies; legal establishments.

The Physician
Manager II role provides career tracks for Chief
Physicians who are medical facility directors providing overall medical,
administrative, and clinical direction for a state residential or medical
facility; or medical directors overseeing medical care for a state medical
facility or a statewide health system; or the administrator and medical
consultant to a statewide medical regulatory board; or Commonwealth’s
Medical Examiner.
Physician Manager II
COMPLEXITY

- Considerable hospital and administrative management experience.
- Frequent contacts to discuss facility or health care management
issues and regulations with legislators; Attorney General’s office;
law enforcement and court officials; state, and federal agencies;
patients and families; licensees; professional associations; and
certifying bodies.

RESULTS

- Significant impact on the quality of health care and efficient
use of resources.
- Decisions may impact the continued certification and funding
of medical programs.
- Accurate regulation of physicians and other medical professionals
impacts the quality of treatment and appropriate delivery of health
