Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for veterinary technicians and veterinarians performing veterinary services. The services include: laboratory diagnostics, veterinary in-service clinical training/certification, investigations, inspections, animal disease control, animal health and welfare, prevention of contamination of food of animal origin, protecting the health and safety of imported animals and products, safety of animal products, and cooperative enforcement activities for public and private sectors. Employees’ responsibilities range from entry-level technician to executive management. Veterinarians require Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM) from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), accredited veterinary college or certification by the AVMA’s Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates.

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Veterinary Science Career Group. These roles define the typical career paths for employees who pursue careers as veterinary technicians or veterinarians.

Although both of these occupations perform veterinary services, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to the other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Groups.

Veterinary Technician I

The Veterinary Technician I role provides career tracks for veterinary technicians who provide skilled technical support to clinical faculty and veterinary students within a small animal and/or large animal clinic or Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Duties include performing and scheduling regular and diagnostic special procedures; electrodiagnostic procedures; critical care nursing procedures; serving as anesthetist; giving instruction, supervision, and assistance to veterinary students; monitoring medical equipment; and assisting clinical faculty with emergency treatment of animals.
COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of principles, and practices governing veterinary science to the care and treatment of animals.
  • Adheres to Accreditation Standards and other regulatory requirements for testing animals.
  • Supports clinical faculty by performing skilled technical work.
  • Frequent contacts with students, technicians, and other staff to provide technical expertise and to ensure that specialized procedures are performed properly.
RESULTS
  • Critical animal care and technical support is given for small and large animals.
  • Instruction, supervision, and assistance are given to veterinary students in the area of anesthesia, intensive care management, and special diagnostics.
ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Instructs, supervises, and assists veterinary students.
  • Exercises sound judgment and decision-making regarding patient care.
 

Veterinary Technician II/ Veterinarian I

The Veterinary Technician II/Veterinarian I role provides career tracks for the veterinary technicians serving as technical supervisors in a veterinary hospital. This career track is for employees who provide supervisory direction in a small or large animal medicine and/or surgery section of a veterinary teaching hospital.

The second career track is for veterinarians whose expertise level ranges from entry level to advanced level. Employees are responsible for enforcement of regulations that protect animal’s health and welfare and the health of consumers by investigating animal diseases, contamination of food of animal origin, the sanitation of various food products and cooperative enforcement activities involving both public and private sectors.

Veterinary Technician II (Supervisor)

COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of principles, practices and laws governing veterinary science to the technical direction of a laboratory or medical and surgical sections of a veterinary teaching hospital.
  • Adheres to Accreditation Standards and other regulatory requirements for treating animals.
  • Supports clinical faculty and veterinary hospital administration by performing skilled technical work.
  • May supervise and instruct advanced veterinary medical students, and veterinary technicians on how to conduct professional animal care techniques and specialized procedures.
  • Frequent contacts with students, technicians, faculty, Veterinary practitioners, and other staff to provide technical expertise and to ensure that specialized procedures are performed properly.
RESULTS
  • May train, and certify staff and students in anesthesia, intensive care management and special diagnostic procedures in a veterinary teaching hospital.
  • May manage externships for veterinary technologists.
ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Supervises paraprofessionals, senior veterinary students, technicians, or other staff in a veterinary teaching hospital.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and assisting in the administration of animal health or veterinary functions.
  • Advises management on staffing and program needs.

(Veterinarian I)

COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of principles, practices, and laws governing veterinary medicine.
  • Adheres to accreditation standards and other regulatory requirements for treating animals.
  • Serves as a professional with variable duties in veterinary field services or veterinary diagnostic work.
  • Investigates animal diseases, contamination of food of animal origin, sanitation of various food products.
  • Performs cooperative enforcement activities.
  • Provides veterinary diagnostic services to assist private practitioners and the public.
  • Frequent contacts with consumers, state agencies, state/federal officials, and veterinary practitioners to ensure compliance with animal health requirements.
RESULTS
  • Consumers are protected against unhealthy animals, diseases, and food borne illnesses.
  • Promotes animal health and welfare by diagnosis, treatment, and examinations.
  • Protects clients from economic losses due to animal disease or loss of markets.
ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Independently resolves daily veterinarian issues within an assigned area.
  • May supervise professional and paraprofessional staff.
 

Veterinarian II

The Veterinarian II role provides career tracks for veterinarians who act as supervisors and are involved in the statewide administration of a regional laboratory or veterinary service programs. These laboratories, animal disease control and welfare programs are in support of the Virginia livestock and meat/poultry industries, veterinary practitioners, and the public.
COMPLEXITY
  • Applies knowledge of principles, practices, and laws governing veterinary science.
  • Adheres to Accreditation Standards and other regulatory requirements for treating animals.
  • Applies knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and management of staff and budget.
  • Formulates, administers, interprets, and makes recommendations regarding budgets, policies and procedures.
  • Frequent contacts with consumers, other state agencies, private entities, government and legislative officials to provide advises and consultations on program issues.
RESULTS
  • Ensures well-being of consumers with regard to animal health and welfare.
  • Impacts effectiveness, success, and fiscal responsibility of programs, functions, staffing and customer service.
  • Protects consumers and industry from economic loss due to disease or loss of markets.
ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Exercises sound judgment in making autonomous leadership and administrative, professional decisions.
  • Provides guidance and training for other staff in a functional area.
  • Identifies and implements strategies or processes to support agency and program missions.
  • Supervises staff, program(s) and administrative functions in an assigned area including personnel and budgetary issues.

The Veterinarian III role provides career tracks for veterinarians who serve as experts providing specialized and statewide diagnostic services in the Animal Industry Services Laboratory System.

Veterinarian III

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of principles, practices, and laws governing veterinary science.
  • Frequent contacts with agency veterinarians, private veterinarian practitioners, other state agencies, private entities and government, and the general public to provide technical expertise and to advise on diagnostics.

  • Impacts the effectiveness, success, and responsibility of programs, functions, staffing, and customer service.
ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Exercises authority to make complex decisions regarding consumers, animal health/welfare and other program issues.
  • Assists in the resolution of technical problems.
  • Exercises independent judgment within scope of authority; consults management on unusual issues.
Veterinary Manager
The Veterinary Manager role provides career tracks for managers who serve as State Veterinarians and direct Animal Industry Services (AIS) programs. Responsibilities include: administrative management, staff supervision, budget, planning, goals/objectives, quality assurance to ensure compliance with AIS laws and regulations, agency policies, and the promotion of economic development in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of standards and guidelines required by the accrediting agents and American Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Manages administrative and operational aspects of multiple veterinary programs.
