that provide a full range of supervision and casework services to offenders
in the community as officers of the court system. Employees perform responsibilities
ranging from entry level to management level and include administering
probation and parole offices, court service units, or managing units in
a probation and parole specialty.

The Probation
Officer I role provides career tracks for the
probation officers
performing duties that range from entry level to advanced level. Duties
include community and institutional based offender supervision and case
management services to probationers, parolees, detainees and others as
officers of the courts.
Probation Officer I
COMPLEXITY
|
- Work requires discretion and judgment in supervising routine
to high-risk offenders.
- Provides supervision by conducting investigations for the courts
prior to sentencing, assessing offender needs, referring offenders
to service providers, and documenting compliance with court ordered
conditions of probation or parole.
- May function as specialized officers and supervise the most
difficult offenders, in such areas as sexual offenses, substance
abuse, or those requiring intensive supervision.
- Frequent and sensitive external community contact to manage
offenders.
- Work is complicated by the nature of the assigned caseload.
- May require certification.

The Probation
Officer II role provides career tracks for probation
officers who provide direct offender supervision
and work as supervisors, usually in a district office or court service
unit or serve as an expert providing specialized services in order to
make parole recommendations to the Virginia Parole Board.

or a specialized probation or parole unit for delivery of community supervision
