Concept of Work
This Career Group provides career
tracks for security guards,
security officers, correctional officers, and
wardens
who perform security related tasks to ensure a safe secure environment.
Employees perform duties ranging from entry-level trainee security officers
to executive level managers. Certain employees are responsible for carrying
and using weapons and other physical and electronic control devices, and
may exercise police authority. Successful completion of training and certification
mandated by the Department of Criminal Justice Services may be required.
Roles Comprising This Group
These roles describe the collective
characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Security
Services Career Group. The roles define the
typical career paths for employees who pursue careers such as security
guards,
security officers,
correctional officers and wardens.
Although all of these occupations are security officers,
each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires
different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead
to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these
occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression.
Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in
this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career
Groups.

These roles are distinguished based upon the Compensable

classification. These factors should be used for classification and compensation
analysis. Recruitment and selection standards must be based on knowledge,

Security Officer I

The Security
Officer I role provides career tracks for security
guards that perform closely prescribed inspections
on State property to ensure a safe environment. Duties range from entry-level
trainee to lead security guard. Employees patrol, site or building access,
monitoring staff, visitors, and the public to ensure compliance with security
and safety procedures, information exchange, and reporting of unusual
or emergency conditions to appropriate authorities.

The Security
Officer II role provides career tracks for security
officers who perform a combination of security,
inspection, and traffic control on state property, bridges, and tunnels.
Assignments range from routine to leading the work of security staff,
inspecting vehicles for compliance with regulations, controlling traffic,
assisting the public, and reporting incidents to higher authority.

Security Officer III

The Security
Officer III role provides career tracks for
security officers and
correctional officers ranging
from entry and trainee level security officers to senior security officers.
Employees are responsible for: providing security and safety functions
for a state facility, educational or cultural institution; performing
custody and control tasks in correctional settings for a state facility
or educational institution; or monitoring electronic and other communication
devices on a transportation route or bridge/tunnel complex to ensure safe
traffic flow and arrange for emergency services.
Security Officer III
COMPLEXITY

- Applies knowledge of assigned program area.
- Certification may be required.
- Specialized equipment and control or monitoring device operation
is a requirement.
- Responsibilities may include leadership, supervision or serving
as drill instructors in a military style institutional program.

- Decisions effect compliance with established rules and procedures,
and safety of staff, the public and inmates.

ACCOUNTABILITY
|
- Exercises independent enforcement authority.
- Leadership or staff supervision may be a responsibility.
- Determination as to use of force typically occurs at this level.

The Security
Officer IV role provides career tracks for security
officers who are either security supervisors
or are experts. The first track is for security officers who provide shift
or program supervision to security staff. The second track is for senior
correctional officers who demonstrate exceptional skills in areas encompassing
inmate and security management, physical abilities, report writing and
documentation, performance, and interpersonal skill developments.
Security Officer IV (Supervisor)
COMPLEXITY

- Sound judgment and discretion in application of regulation and
procedure.
- Security management and program knowledge is required.

|
- Impacts adherence to operating procedures and post orders.
- Actions directly impact the quality of institutional life, the
safety of individuals, and the security of the facility.
- Tours of duty are completed safely and properly documented.
- Actions affect day to day operations.

- Supervision is a requirement.
- Most security related problems and questions are resolved at
this level.

Security Officer IV (Expert)

- Applies extraordinary knowledge and ability in security management
techniques.

institution.

|
- Supports efforts of other security staff in inmate management.
|
The Security
Manager I role provides career tracks for first
level correctional security managers
supervising day to day institutional programs and operations; agency security
managers
with responsibility for a major program area; and for senior agency security
directors with
responsibilities for management of administrative, budgeting, operational,
and programmatic activities.

The Security
Manager II role provides career tracks for security
management specialists
who plan and supervise operational, programmatic, and administrative functions.
Employees supervise shifts of security officers and support staff, manage
housing units, function as the chief security specialist in large institutions
or agencies, or manage significant programmatic functions in prisons or
are the charge managers in smaller correctional or community institutions.
Employees may function as the senior agency security director of a small
non-correctional State, cultural or educational institution with high
security risk operations.
