Concept of Work

The Equipment Service and Repair Career Group provides a career track for equipment and repair technicians that service and repair equipment, such as aircraft, watercraft, automobiles, medium and heavy-duty on-road and off-road equipment, musical equipment, elevators, boilers, turbines, machines, and other related equipment. The range of work is from entry level technical repair to management. Some positions may require FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification with Inspection Authorization, State Vehicle Inspection License; Commercial Driver’s License, or other relevant certifications.

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Equipment Service and Repair Career Group. The roles define the typical career paths for employees who pursue careers in this field, such as mechanics, machinists, and installers and repairers of various types of equipment.

Although all of these occupations are equipment service and repair technicians, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Groups.

Equipment Service and Repair Technician I

The Equipment Service and Repair Technician I role provides a career path for service and repair technicians performing entry level responsibilities to first line working supervisory responsibilities. Duties include manually labor intensive work that involves the service and repair of mechanical, electronic, and other equipment requiring technical knowledge and expertise, effective diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures related to a wide variety of equipment.

Equipment Service and Repair Technician I

COMPLEXITY

  • Skill in the use of diagnostic equipment and a variety of tools specific to the trade.
  • Applies knowledge of the design and function of equipment.
  • Performs skilled technician work that involves diagnosis, replacement, repair and rebuilding of a variety of equipment, components and/or systems.
  • Ability to interpret and follow technical manuals, blueprints, mechanical drawings, and schematics.
  • Follows industry/ government specific guidelines, particularly as they relate to safety, health and environmental practices.
  • May apply principles and practices of electrical and electronics theory.
  • May require State inspection license and/or Commercial Drivers license.

RESULTS

  • Error-free results affect the public safety.
  • Ineffective job performance impacts the efficiency of equipment operations.
  • Violation of safety practices could endanger lives.
  • Accurate and timely repairs represent savings in cost and time to the agency or university.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Ensures detailed repairs, safety and health procedures and industry/government standards are followed.
  • May provide technical work direction.
  • Refers complex issues to higher supervision. Seeks approval for repairs exceeding defined costs.

The Equipment Service and Repair Technician II role provides a career path for the equipment service and repair technicians with an advanced skilled level requiring technical expertise in specialized equipment repair and may require expertise in instruction of equipment users and knowledge of supervisory practices. Duties involve the service and repair of complex and specialized mechanical, electronic, and other equipment, such as watercrafts or aircraft.

  • Adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs.
  • Extensive experience in the function.
  • Special licenses may be required for some positions.

  • Serves as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
  • Efficient service and repair results in reduction of equipment downtime, cost of operation, and public welfare.
  • Violation of safety practices could endanger lives.
  • Errors may result in significant agency inconvenience.

ACCOUNTABIITY

  • May orient, train, assign and check the work of lower level employees.
  • May be designated as lead worker or supervise a small group of technicians.
  • Makes decisions’ affecting not only the repair of equipment, but involves scheduling, and the work and safety of others.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

 

The Equipment Service and Repair Manager I role is for managers responsible for supervising and managing work in the field of equipment repair. Employees provide the full range of supervision to work crews, plan and prioritize work, and maintain appropriate records.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of services provided and recommends changes in procedures to meet users’ needs.

  • Follows industry specific guidelines, particularly as they relate to safety and environmental practices.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures and provide direction.
  • Possesses and applies knowledge of cost management principles.

RESULTS

  • Effective job performance ensures safe and continued operation of the equipment and efficiency in equipment operations.
  • Violation of safety practices could endanger lives and create an adverse environmental impact.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Supervises technicians and/or first level supervisors.
  • Ensures detailed operational and safety procedures are followed. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies’ standards.
  • Responsible for meeting and maintaining budgetary requirements.
  • May coordinate contractor or vendor services.

The Equipment Service and Repair Manager II role provides a career track for managers responsible for performing, supervising, and managing maintenance and repair work of unusual technical difficulty. Employees provide the full range of supervision to technicians or contractual service providers, plan, prioritize work and evaluate, may conduct pre-flight inspections, and maintain appropriate records.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of services provided and recommends changes in procedures to meet users’ needs.

  • Follows and monitors industry specific guidelines, particularly as they relate to safety and environmental practices.
  • Ability to interpret and follow direction as well as provide direction.
  • May require a FAA Airframe and PowerPoint Certificate with Inspection Authorization and/or other relevant certifications.
  • Possesses and applies knowledge of cost management procedures and techniques.

RESULTS

  • Effective job performance results in workplace efficiencies in equipment operations and enhances the safety of employees and the public.
  • Errors may result in significant negative publicity for the agency.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Supervision of technicians and contractual service providers on and off-site.
  • Ensures detailed operational and safety procedures are followed and compliance with strict regulatory standards.
  • Responsible for meeting and maintaining budgetary requirements.
  • May be accountable for statewide maintenance program, with responsibility for certifying conformance to Federal requirements.
