Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career Tracks for housekeepers, laundry and dry cleaning workers, and tailors. The housekeepers provide housekeeping services for public buildings, institutions of higher learning, and correctional, residential, and health facilities. The apparel workers provide apparel services, such as laundry, tailoring and dry cleaning for students, inmates, patients, and residents. Employees’ responsibilities range from entry to management level.

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Housekeeping and Apparel Services Career Group. The roles define the typical career paths for housekeepers, laundry and dry cleaning workers, and tailors or dressmakers.

Each of these occupations warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and would not naturally lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Groups.

Housekeeping and/or Apparel Worker I

The Housekeeping and/or Apparel Worker I role provides career tracks for housekeepers, laundry and dry cleaner workers, and tailors performing entry level to advance level services in the areas of housekeeping, laundry, tailoring, and dry cleaning.

Housekeeping and/or Apparel Worker I

COMPLEXITY

  • Tasks are manual labor intensive utilizing cleaning equipment, laundry and dry cleaning equipment and/or a variety of sewing machinery.
  • Ability to perform a variety of cleaning tasks.
  • Applies knowledge of dry cleaning techniques and/or laundry operations and/or knowledge of standard practices and procedures of tailoring.
  • Ability to interpret and follow direction.
  • Internal and external contacts with customers to discuss services.
  • Follows any industry specific guidelines and safety regulations to include blood-borne pathogens and other related OSHA and EPA guidelines.
  • Applies knowledge of cleaning techniques, and proper use of chemicals and solutions.
  • Ability to use industrial grade equipment.

RESULTS

  • Effective job performance results in the successful and timely completion of projects.
  • Ineffective job performance can negatively affect cost, service, timeliness, appearance, convenience, health and safety and public image.

ACCOUNTBILITY

  • Follows, or ensures that others follow, operational and safety procedures.

  • If functioning in a crew leader capacity, responsible for exercising independent judgment in problem solving. Otherwise, refer non-routine issues to higher levels.

Housekeeping and/or Apparel Worker II

The Housekeeping and/or Apparel Worker II role provides career tracks for supervisors responsible for providing daily supervision in the areas of housekeeping, laundry, tailoring, and dry cleaning. Employees may act as working supervisors and in many cases inspect and approve work of agencies’ housekeeping and/or apparel workers and contract housekeeping and/or apparel workers.

COMPLEXITY

  • Performs a variety of tasks in supervising and performing the required services.
  • Applies knowledge of dry cleaning techniques and/or laundry operations.
  • Applies Knowledge of standard practices and procedures of tailoring.
  • Applies knowledge of housekeeping techniques and operations.
  • Applies knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Ability to interpret and follow direction as well as provide direction.
  • Internal and external contacts with staff and customers to discuss services.

RESULTS

  • Effective job performance results in the successful and timely completion of projects.
  • Job performance affects cost, service, public image, and performance and safety of subordinates.
  • Effective oversight and training of subordinates.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Ensures operational and safety procedures are followed.
  • Provides daily work direction.
  • While functioning in a supervisory capacity, responsible for exercising some independent judgment in problem solving. Non-routine issues are referred to higher levels.
  • Makes on the spot decisions regarding changes in daily working assignments of subordinates. Reacts to unexpected changes in priorities.

The Housekeeping and/or Apparel Manager I role provides career tracks for managers responsible for managing operational aspects of housekeeping, laundry, tailoring, and/or dry cleaning programs. Responsibilities range from managing segments of programs or managing overall program in agencies. These employees schedule, direct, and coordinate the overall management of assigned operations.

Housekeeping and/or Apparel Manager I

COMPLEXITY

  • Plans, schedules, inspects work, and assigns work to subordinate supervisors and/or teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide direction, leadership, and training to employees.
  • External contact with university officials, agency personnel, general public, and outside vendors to resolve problems, purchase supplies, and provide general information.
  • Applies knowledge of management principles and practices.
  • May supervise shift workers and inspect and approve contract workers.

The Housekeeping and/or Apparel Manager II role provides career tracks for managers of the administrative and operational aspects of housekeeping, laundry, tailoring, and/or dry cleaning services. Managerial responsibilities range from mid-level to director of the entire program(s). Employees establish and maintain production schedules, procure materials, equipment, and supplies, prepare budgets, and confer and resolve problems with facilities sections and vendors. These positions require Working knowledge of management practices and principles including budgeting, procurement, and supervision, as well as considerable skill and/or experience in the specific areas of housekeeping, laundry, tailoring, and/or dry cleaning.

  • Manages a broad spectrum of functions, staff, and administrative activities.
  • Applies knowledge of subject area(s).
  • Applies knowledge of administration of program, resources, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage others and to communicate effectively.

  • Reviews programs/ processes for effectiveness.
  • Contacts include the public, other state agencies, private entities, and government officials to coordinate and plan activities and negotiate or procure services.

  • Program meets goals in terms of production by staff and utilization of resources.
