This Career Group provides career tracks for printers’ assistants and printers that provide support to program administration by creating or reproducing printed images of text and graphics. Applies knowledge of the necessary technologies in this area. Employees’ responsibilities range from trainee to management level.

Printing Technician I

The Printing Technician I role provides a career track for bindery workers or printers’ assistants responsible for completing basic physical tasks that support reproduction services or document finishing services such as cutting, binding, and folding.

Printing Technician I

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge on how to operate folding, binding, collating and other finishing equipment.
  • On occasion talks to customer about job order.
  • Applies existing procedures and guidelines in completing the runs or printing services.

RESULTS

  • Finished documents are prepared according to job orders.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Refers questions and problems to higher levels.

 

Printing Technician II

The Printing Technician II role provides a career track for entry to journey level printers responsible for completing basic printing duties necessary to generate production runs of documents. This includes operating and performing routine maintenance on the machinery, as well as record keeping.

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of basic offset printing, digital printing or photocopy equipment and associated finishing equipment.
  • Has frequent contact with customers to discuss job orders.
  • Assignments range from producing printed materials having routine technical requirements to copying a variety of materials and cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Applies knowledge of electronic pre-press software.

RESULTS

  • Produces printed material according to job requirements and application of existing procedures and guidelines.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Runs printing or copying jobs independently.
  • Refers questions to supervisor.

 

Printing Technician III

The Printing Technician III role provides a career track for printers performing advanced level or supervisory responsibilities. Duties range from operating various types of printing or copying equipment to being a first line supervisor of staff performing duties related to duplicating and producing printed documents. Duties may include digital as well as offset and photocopy printing.

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge of digital printing and photocopy techniques and equipment.
  • Applies knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Has contact with customers to discuss job orders.
  • Assignments range from preparing a single document for reproduction to producing complex reports, brochures and multi-colored documents to supervising those reproducing the documents.
  • May work in a copy center and respond to customers, handle cash, cash receipts, and key in registers.

RESULTS

  • The materials (e.g., brochures, books, and reports) are reproduced according to job order.
  • Customers are satisfied with materials and timeframes are met avoiding downtime.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Independently resolves daily printing issues. Refers unusual issues to others.
  • May train, orient, and supervise the work of printers or technicians.
  • May be responsible for working with customers and the handling of cash and register to insure that the cash and register balance.

The Printing Technician IV role provides career tracks for expert printers using the highest technical knowledge of printing or digital reproductions in conferring with and assessing customer needs, making recommendations, and writing job specifications to have the work produced within or outside the agency and managing the process or project.

  • Applies knowledge of the technical resources of full range of printing services.
  • Applies knowledge of printing or copying equipment, techniques, and materials.
  • Frequently consults with customers and managers on complex job orders and resolution of problems.
  • Assignments range from assessing customer's needs to advising on technical matters, (e.g. materials to use, format) and presentation to developing job specifications.

RESULTS

  • Customer is satisfied with the finished product, resolution of the problem, and the advice and support provided.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Independently handles customers’ problems and technical questions on printing services.
  • May orient and train others.

 

The Printing Manager I role provides a career track for managers of others in the performance of a wide variety of printing tasks. These responsibilities may be accomplished through subordinate supervisors and employees or through contractors. May function as the charge printing position with financial and staffing responsibilities in an agency’s complex printing operation or as an assistant-manager in the largest most complex printing operations.

  • Frequently consults with other managers and staff on production or job quality problems, and vendors on cost problem resolution.
  • Assignments range from heading a full service-printing unit to preparing financial analysis and reports, job costing, to developing shop procedures.
  • Presented with problems that do not have easy solutions.

RESULTS

  • Printing unit is delivering services to customers’ satisfaction.
  • Job and unit costs are appropriate and unit’s resources are within budget.

Printing Manager II

The Printing Manager II role provides a career track for managers of others in the performance of a wide variety of printing tasks as the charge position in the largest and most complex settings. Employees are responsible for the management of subordinate supervisors as well as technical employees and include the normal range of managerial duties such as planning, budgeting, staffing, and evaluation.

  • Frequently consults with major customers on complex job orders, outside printing contractors on cost and problem resolution, and management on policies and procedure development.
